Spring Tours

Our Spring tours run from April through June and focus on studying the farm as new leaves, blossoms, and baby fruit appear. On their wagon ride around the farm children will be able to see and touch the different kinds of fruits in their earliest stages of growth.

We usually do not have many options for fruit picking on spring tours, however late May and early June tours often coincide with strawberry picking season.  When fruits are available, picking is included with the tour.

On all tours we like to show children the actual farm work and activities that are happening with the season.  Plowing, Planting, Discing, and tree pruning are common spring work activities.  Spring tours in particular often include hands on demonstrations such as fruit tree planting in which the children may participate.

After their tour the children will get to plant their own mini garden to take home. The mini garden is a fun project which includes planting a few vegetable seeds and  two vegetable plants in peat planter that they can take home to watch grow and eventually plant in a home garden or large pot.

Picnic tables are available for a snack or lunch. Warm outfits are important as spring temperature and winds can change quickly. Call or e-mail for more details

Summer Tours

July and August is summer tour season.  These tours are designed primarily for summer camps, church groups, and day care groups and have a more relaxed atmosphere to accommodate groups with a wider range of ages.

Fruit picking availability is better than for spring tours with peaches, early apples, berries, plums, and vegetables ripening during this season.   On their hay ride the children will stop to pick whichever crop is available ,sometimes getting to pick more than one variety.

After their hay ride the kids will tackle a farm related craft project which can be scheduled either before or after lunch as your time allows.  This summers main craft will be the past favorite, painting a clay pot and planting a flower to take home.

Summer tour activities can be flexible and groups often add  games, songs, or other outside activities to round out the day.  As with spring tours we try to show current farm work in progress and will add farm equipment demonstrations if crops are not available to pick.

We are putting extra emphasis this year on clothing and footwear.  Please encourage parents to send their children with light jackets or rainwear as necessary.   Enclosed shoes like sneakers and hiking boots provide the best foot protection and traction on uneven ground. Call for more details or scheduling.

Helpful Information

Make sticky labels with the children's names to place on their fruit bags or craft.

Groups will be broken down to smaller groups based on wagon capacity, but will not be placed with any other school group.

Be sure to let parents know that students should dress appropriately for the weather and orchard conditions. Play clothes and durable enclosed shoes are recommended. Parents should send along a light jacket or rain coat as temperature changes, winds and showers can occur at any time.

An apple orchard is a busy place! While your orchard guides have made a commitment to teaching children about the orchard, this is not their primary job. Please be active in the control of your class.  To assure your safety and quality of experience, we have planned a route and presentation within our schedule.  There may be other schools or classes nearby who are in a different part of the tour and other customers here to pick fruit. Please help your students to experience the beauty of the orchard by having them clean up after their lunch.

Chaperones

Chaperones will receive the same amount of fruit as the children.  If they would like extra they may pick it separately after the tour and pay for it at the farm stand.

Cancellations

In case of rain or inclement weather it is your decision to cancel.  We have learned that waiting until the morning of your tour is best due to rapidly changing weather .
